Sedation

Sedation is usually used for day case procedures including but not limited to endoscopy, colonoscopy, cardioversion, pacemaker or ICD insertion; since patient cooperation is sometimes needed in such cases, therefore surgeons or physicians would not want to patient to be completely unconscious. During the sedation or monitored anesthesia care, patient is in a deep twilight sleep condition and continues to breathe spontaneously without the assistance of a breathing device or a ventilator.

General Anesthesia

This is the common type of anesthesia that is the primary choice for most general surgery procedures. Patients will usually become unconscious as a result intravenous or inhalational agents. During surgery patient will have a breathing device or a face mask to assist with breathing and in most cases the patient is placed on a ventilator while on the operating table. IV opoids are used as well during the procedure to palliate and lessen surgical pain.

Cardiothoracic Anesthesia

At Istishari Hospital our cardiac operating theater is not only equipped with the latest technology to ensure safe procedures and outcome in the field of heart and lung surgery, but we rely heavily on our expert anesthesiologists well versed in open heart bypass, valvular, aortic, and lung resection surgeries. Sure enough cardiac and cardiothoracic surgeries are performed under general anesthesia as well as a breathing tube and ventilator. During those surgeries we make sure that patient is served with the newest and most up to date noninvasive and invasive monitors including arterial pressure, CVP, and pulmonary artery pressure monitoring. We continuously monitor the heart functions and assess the surgical repair with a transesophageal echo probe for heart surgery; the patient is generally placed on a heart lung machine for a period during the case. An epidural may also be inserted for select cases, especially lung resection surgery for post-op pain control and improved lung function.

Orthopedic Anesthesia

This kind of procedures can be done either with general or local anesthesia depending on the nature and location of the surgery.

Local Anesthesia

Istishari Hospital highly qualified and experienced anesthesiologists recommend the use of local anesthetics mostly epidural or spinal and in some cased never block for below the waist or extremity surgeries. Their choice for this kind of anesthesia administration is to prevent patient from undergoing unnecessary discomfort resulting from the use of the general anesthesia while ensuring safe and pain free procedures. Once the medicine takes effect patient will be num from the waist down while being conscious during the procedure.

Spinal anesthesia

This kind of anesthesia procedure is usually used in medical cases such as joint replacement and hernia repair. The process act on blocking the nerve signals from the lower part of the body in both ways for the duration of the procedure. To start the process a special nurse anesthetist or an anesthesiologist administer the local anesthetic in the patient lower back in order to numb the injection site, then a thin needle is in place to deliver the pain relieving medication into the fluid surrounding the spinal cord to insure that the patient is completely comfortable and pain free throughout the procedure.

Epidural anesthesia

This preferable choice of anesthesia during childbirth is usually delivered outside the spinal cord in the epidural space. The positive side of this process is the fact that it provides pain relief after the operation through an inserted catheter. Specialists from the anesthesia group are willing to meet with mothers-to-be every day to explain the process and address all questions and concerns they may have in order to help them have a memorable childbirth experience.

Nerve Blocks

At times, the pain management resulting from issues related to a specific nerve can be addressed by blocking the nerve. Through this process medicine is injected around a specific nerve or a cluster of nerves to alleviate the pain. Nerve block is common treatment prior to knee and hip surgeries and a main anesthetic for hand, arm and foot surgeries.
